The Husband and His Cocktail

A man holding a drink

Here’s The Husband recently diving into a cocktail christened De Goldene B’Adler (a/k/a The Golden Eagle) — a drink he “invented” himself — at Alpino Restaurant in Detroit.  Weirdly, the husband is neither a chef nor a bartender.  He is, however, a fan of gin & tonic.  He also happens to have grown up in Motown.  These converging realities led to his inspiration to “improve” and localize standard issue g&t’s by swapping out the tonic in favor of Vernor’s Ginger Ale, the iconic beverage invented in Detroit in 1866.  It’s a suggestion that was taken to heart Mr. David Richter the founder and owner of Alpino with whom The Husband has been pals for decades.  David and his team elaborated on The Husband’s basic idea, focusing on Vernor’s syrup and zhuzhing it up.  I must say that the final version is a lip-smacking gem — and this is coming from me, a wine drinker!!!
