Sara’s Weeknight Meals: Season 06

Episode 606: Between the Bread

A sandwich might be the ultimate weeknight meal – hearty, portable and easy enough for anyone to make. Sara’s got two great ones: her Picadillo Sloppy Joe with the terrific counterpoint of prunes and green olives. Surprisingly, she’ll show you how to grind your own meat! Roasted Vegetable and fresh Ricotta Sandwiches are another winning combo, and Sara even shows you how to make the ricotta. We’ll also visit a bakery for bread lovers – Hot Bread Kitchen. This non-profit food incubator helps struggling women get a leg up by teaching them baking skills so they may move on to jobs at other bakeries. We’ll sample some of their delicious bread.

Hot Bread Kitchen is a non-profit social enterprise bakery that creates economic opportunity through careers in food. We provide paid, on-the-job training for low-income women facing barriers to employment, and we place 100% of our graduates in full-time positions with access to benefits. By learning the trade of bread baking along with key skills like English as a second language, bakery math, and science, women from as far as Bangladesh and as close as East Harlem leverage talent and passion to launch culinary careers.

At Hot Bread Kitchen we make over 70 products, including ethnic breads inspired by the culinary traditions of our bakers, as well as everyday favorites like challah hot dog buns and parker house rolls.  This broad range of products not only serves our customers’ needs, but also ensures the women we train are among the most in-demand bakers in New York City.

Every loaf sold helps us bake breadwinners and change lives. You can find our products, purchase a cookbook, or make a dough-nation to help support our mission at hotbreadkitchen.org.
