The humble bean at its frugal best when I travel to the island of Guernsey to make their beloved Bean Jar, a meat and bean community wide cooking tradition involving unused bakery ovens. But first, I visit the local hedge vege honor stands to buy homegrown veggies and discover a local goat breed saved from extinction during World War II. It’s more beans back in the US when I help a Washington state viewer with her bean questions on “Ask Sara, ” then I make an easy White Bean Soup with homemade dumplings. Hearty fare, smart shortcuts and a celebration of island community.
