Suddenly I have noticed that there are Malaysian restaurants popping up all over New York City. I have never focused before on this particular kind of Asian cuisine and so I decided to check out a restaurant in my neighborhood (which has a woman chef!) called Laut. I tasted roti canai, crispy pancake with a coconut chicken curry, beef rendeng, wonderful spiced beef, and papaya salad so good I ordered a second. I finished off the meal with a Malaysian specialty, “stretched tea” a very sweet tea poured from cup to cup tableside to mix the flavors. I will definitely go back to this very cozy little restaurant. It is located at 15 east 17th Street.
Sara, Malaysian food is awesome! I’m glad you enjoyed Laut. You should also check out Nyonya in Chinatown/Little Italy, it’s on Grand between Mott/Mulberry. Cheaper and far superior to Laut in my humble opinion. If you’re feeling adventurous, try the Asam Laksa, I’d be curious to see what you think! It’s one of my favourite Malaysian dishes, but they always ask you if you’ve had it before when you order; I’m assuming because it’s not for everyone?
