Gourmet Scoop
Each month on Gourmet Scoop I write a column about something that fascinates me in the food world. Sometimes the column is about new discoveries, sometimes about old favorites, and always full of tips that I hope will make your time in the kitchen more fun. Click here for this month's column. Crooked Brook Aprons and Chef Jackets
One of the most frequent questions I get in my e-mail is, "Where can I find the beautiful aprons you wear on Sara's Secrets." All of my fitted aprons and chefs jackets are made by Crooked Brook. Over a decade ago, designer Pam Geren recognized that women in professional kitchens just didn't look their best in jackets and aprons designed to fit men. She combined her pattern-making skills and her passion for quality materials to produce professional kitchen wear for women that really fits and looks attractive. Don't worry guys, there is a full line for you too. All garments are made to order (in the U.S.) from 100% American pima cotton. Call 315-733-1992 for more information.
Rick's Picks
The memory of pickling dilly beans in Vermont with his parents in the 1970s inspired Rick Field to begin making pickles in his Brooklyn apartment in 1997. After lots of research, he began turning vegetables from the local farmers' market into a creative collection of award-winning pickles with names you won't forget. Today you can pick up Windy City Wasa Beans, Phat Beets, Smokra, Whup Asp, Slices of Life, and lots more at gourmet stores, the Union Square Market in New York, by calling 212-358-0428 or on line at RicksPicks. On the web site, you'll find pickle pairings as well. Check out the Pregnancy Pack, or Stinky Sweethearts, or join the Pickle Club.
You can't think of Mardi Gras in North America without thinking of New Orleans and all the great food that has been the hallmark of the Crescent City for several centuries. It is now several years since hurricane Katrina stopped the party in one devastating week and, while recovery from the tragedy that followed has been slow, the city's restaurants have now gotten their kitchens in order and are ready to welcome you to the feast before the fast. Take a look here or here to see what's happening this week in the Big Easy. But if you can't get there, bring out the spices, take a look at my easy New Orleans Shrimp in Sara's Secrets for Weeknight Meals (page 207), and serve a meal worthy of the occasion.

When Isaac Mizrahi asked me to come and cook burgers with him on his new web site, I couldn't wait to introduce him to the Det Burgers from Sara's Secrets for Weeknight Meals. What fun! To see a quick preview go to watchisaac.com and take a look at Video 3.
